“This work is a continuation of the works I produced last summer in China, using William Blake’s” Drawings on Dante’s Divine Comedy. “The idea of the poet traveling through heaven and hell is humorous and romantic analogy for the painter in the studio, and it also allows me to think differently about figuration and abstraction than before, where a figure emerges out of or through abstraction.” (Ross Chisholm)

William Blake’s belief in an accurate representation of reality was based on subjective memory rather than a detailed reproduction of what the eye actually perceives. Much more important to him is the reflection or rather the visualization of personal thoughts, opinions and experiences. On this basis, Ross Chisholm creates in his works a space in which the figurative meets the abstract without being mutually exclusive. With the use of geometric abstraction, combined with the technique of Old Masters of traditional portraits, Ross Chisholm develops his own style with a unique painterly quality.
