until 30.11. | #2619ARTatBerlin | Raab Galerie presents from 2nd November 2019 an exhibition with artworks by the artist Rainer Fetting and Hubertus Giebe.

November exhibitions are often thought-provoking, but the upcoming one makes you fancy painting.
On the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the beautiful experiences predominate in our memories.

Painting by Rainer Fetting and Hubertus Giebe is today an experience that impresses.  Modernism has accompanied both of them on their way to a painterly serenity that is enchanting.  Hodler, Kokoschka, van Gogh, Gaughin, Matisse, Die Brücke, Abstract Expressionism and many contemporaries they can call upon. The result is works by Fetting and Giebe, in which the artists’ joy in painting can be read on every square centimeter and the spark of enthusiasm jumps over to us.

If you go back thirty, forty years in the history of both artists, their work is an assertion.  Both test how resilient modern German art traditions are after the Second World War.

For Rainer Fetting, this means bringing German Expressionism into painterly competition with American Acstract Expressionism, while Hubertus Giebe finds his starting point in the art theory of the 1920s and New Objectivity.
Confidence in the suggestive power of painting remains a matter of course for both artists. The occupational risk is not equally great, although Fetting flies through the master examination at the HdK Berlin – which is so embarrassing for the examination committee that the result is corrected – for Giebe the loss of his university place in the third year is a threat to his existence. After two years of forced interruption, he was able to finish his studies in Leipzig because Berhard Heisig stood up for him.

Difficult initial conditions have built up resistance, in the struggle against prevailing prohibitions and prejudices, lack of recognition takes precedence over clarity of expression in the work of art: the one paints masterfully and classically, even generating rejection with the ease of his painting style; the other does not do what the regime wants him to do and yet paints figuratively, figuratively.

At the latest from the fall of the Berlin Wall, when the accustomed world is upside down overnight, the conflict to which the artists were exposed in their respective societies dissolves. Works are created to which our hearts fly today.
Contemporary art is said to be confirmed after thirty years if it is good. We also want to test that with this exhibition. We are also looking for the constants that confirm our feelings, sharpen our gaze and assure us of the authenticity of our memory.

Vernissage: Friday, 1st November 2019, 6 to 9 pm

Ausstellungsdaten: Saturday, 2nd November to Saturday, 30 November 2019
