until 25.11. | #4012ARTatBerlin | Galerie kajetan Berlin shows from 16. September 2023 (Opening: 15.09.) the exhibition Neue Arbeiten by the artist Marta Guisande, *1965, Seville, Spain) at BERLIN ART WEEK 2023.

Marta Guisande is a painter who applies the colour material she uses – such as egg tempera, casein, acrylic and sometimes oil – swiftly and spontaneously onto unprimed cotton fabric. Some of Marta Guisande’s artworks are also created by soaking the fabric in the respective colour substances.

In her works, the artist follows the painterly means and the material in all consistency, also insofar as Marta Guisande’s working process up to the valid creation of the picture includes moments of observation, reflection and doubt about what is being created or what has been created before. Guisande’s works, which often oscillate between the monochrome and its many shades, are formed in the course, layering, overlaying and removal of the paint.

In some cases, graphic lines are drawn or scratched into the still liquid-wet or at times already dried skin of the painting – sometimes biomorphic, sometimes geometrically shaped.

In her course of work and perception, Marta Guisande occasionally changes sides: then the reverse side of the cotton fabric, which was previously seen in this way, becomes the ground and front side for her subsequent further artistic treatment. In this, too, a pictorial experience is followed, the avoidance of the cliché or a copy.

In the same sense, Marta Guisande also does not shy away from stretching or re-stretching the fabric onto a larger stretcher frame relative to the dyed surface, whereby the frame that may be necessary for the effect in the specific case is created in and as the picture itself.

Marta Guisande’s work create breathing picture surfaces, from which the traces of all the previously applied, deeper layers of paint can emerge again. Not infrequently, these paintings glow, as it were, on their own.
