Plastic waste is one of the biggest human challenges and threats to our planet, in addition to the global population explosion and climate change. For a long time, environmentalists and experts have warned against plastic contamination, but politicians are only hesitantly reacting. According to a study published in the scientific journal Science at the beginning of 2015, about 8 million tons of this waste were released into the oceans in 2010. A PET plastic bottle disintegrates only after 450 years.
