Galerie Georg Nothelfer shows within the abc the installation de-fortification by the artist Madeleine Dietz.

The de-fortification of our existence has been happening for centuries. Initially it concerned only the
borders of cities, then it was national frontiers, and finally the boundaries of private homes. Whereas
for a long time people tried to establish in houses and nations (`Fortress Europe´), in recent times
frontiers have become more permeable. Although still we may verbally erect fortresses, it has become
inevitable to newly reflect on the fact that at a global scale our existence has become less stable.
Madeleine Dietz gives artistic expression to the experience of being homeless and the return of the
nomadic. At first sight, `steel´ as a material seems to represent security, construction and delimitation.
However, the artistic layering of the materials, their construction coming close to instability, also refers
to the fragility of this appearance. The objects are in the way, they force us to make detours, however
no longer do they close.
This is immediately political. Compared to earlier works by Dietz, which tell about the ruinous and
perishable, now elements of transition and the preliminary come to the fore. We see an artistic
metaphor: grill, steel, earth are still existent, however now they are reversible elements, moments of
the process of departures, transitions and reorganisations.
