until 20.11. | #3181ARTatBerlin | Köppe Contemporary shows from 25th September 2021 (Opening: 24.09.) the exhibition Entgrenzung (> Demarcation) with works by the artist Becker Schmitz.

Becker Schmitz’s painting has developed from the search for new artistic solutions in the constant experimental use of pictorial means and materials. From representational (mostly landscape-related) painting, the path led to abstraction. The authenticity of expression, the balance between emotion and calculation and the dialogue between the poles of reality and fiction were already essential characteristics of earlier phases of the artist’s work. These characteristics can also be transferred to his new, abstract series of works. Among the special features of the new works: they are created on synthetic canvases (or on glass plates) and painted on both sides, i.e. on the front as well as on the back.

The artist forms his pictures through a dynamic cipher. It is the primary perceptual signal of the works created from 2020 onwards. In their vitality and multiformity, the abstract structures seem to want to explode every limitation of the indefinable space through which they move. Sometimes it seems as if a rhythmically tuned music, inaudible to the viewer, is influencing the painting process, putting the whole composition into an intoxicating state of heightened joie de vivre. Concentration and dissolution are the essential aspects of the current series of works.

As in his painting, Becker Schmitz also succeeds in captivating the viewer in his interactive light art. The simplest materials from the hardware store are cut to size and installed. By means of projection, luminous, often strictly geometric colours and shapes transform interior and exterior spaces into unreal magic worlds of poetic and magical presence.
