D’Guilherme, who sees himself as part of a neo-brut movement – a mixture of New Brutalism and art brut – creates visual landscapes, tablescapes and nightscapes that capture urban life in Berlin and at the same time are inspired by his time in Lisbon, where he developed his practice and lived and worked. Combining rawness and precision, the artist’s paintings are about creative expression in its purest form. As the title No church wild suggests, echoing the rejection of all meaning, value or purpose in the world, D’Guilherme’s work unfolds without fixed attributions, including art historical references and iconographic layers that have become worthless; see, for example, the work of the same title that looks like a mirror-like smartphone screen crammed with apps, reflecting the world around us and our intuitive and rash actions in it. His art and attitude refuse ready-made narratives and settings, which often manifests itself in words and short texts that he tattoos layer by layer into surfaces and materials taken from diverse unconventional sources.

For me, writing is everywhere. It can be felt in the surface texture of my work, for example in materials that stand out from the canvas, in the wood that forms letters or words. I call my poems science and law in three dimensions. But if you call them poems, you might turn poets against me.” – Ál Varo Tavares D’Guilherme in conversation with Claire Koron Elat, 032C, 2022

Opening: Friday, 27. October 2023, 18:00 bis 20:00 Uhr
