until 01.05. | #0145ARTatBerlin | The artist Erik Steinbrecher has conceived a new installation for KW’s courtyard, standing for 10 months (from 5th August 2015 to 1st May 2016) in the visual axis from the courtyard’s entry to the exhibition’s entrance.

SINGLE FLAT (2015) adds a third, even bigger cube to the cubes already present; those nested within each other in the architecture of Café Bravo, designed by Dan Graham.

The expansive platform made of wooden panels and scaffold tube is constructed on a north-south axis, and allows for a variety of possible uses: It is lower than a table, but higher than a chair, functioning as a forum and venue for KW’s program. Visitors are invited to sit or lie down and hang out. As a retreat as well as a stage, this temporary location alters constantly between an intimate place and one of exhibition, which places its visitors in the center.

SINGLE FLAT continues the long-term cooperation between Erik Steinbrecher and KW. It will be inaugurated on Wednesday, August 5, 2015, from 6–9 pm, with a concert by John Miller, Aura Rosenberg, and Frank Lutz (Dirty Mirrors).

Erik Steinbrecher was born in Basel in 1963. His work includes printed matter, photography, videos, sculptures, installative works, and pieces in public spaces. Steinbrecher teaches at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste, and lives in Berlin. His works have been presented at documenta X, Kassel (1997), MoMA PS1, New York (2001), and at Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna (2004).

SINGLE FLAT is supported by Pro Helvetia, the Swiss Arts Council.

The program of KW Institute for Contemporary Art is made possible by the Mayor of Berlin – Senate Chancellery – Cultural Affairs.
