As part of EMOP Berlin – European Month of Photography 2018, Galerie Springer Berlin is presenting works by photographers Ute Mahler and Werner Mahler for the first time, thus enriching its gallery program. The extensive exhibition “Essences – Photographs from Four Decades” includes works by Ute Mahler and Werner Mahler from various creative phases. In addition, the gallery presents a selection from the joint series “Monalisen der Vorstädte,” which the Mahlers created between 2009 and 2011.

Fashion photographs taken between 1977 and 1994 for the magazine “Sibylle” form a central position of the exhibition. Also on view are photographs by Ute Mahler from 1980 with the dancer Jutta Deutschland. There is also a series by Ute Mahler that was taken in Paris in 1979 during a fellowship that was unusual for the GDR at the time. The gallery also shows early works by Werner Mahler (1975 to 1978) as well as a series of landscape photographs from the 1980s.
