until 15.04. | #3820ARTatBerlin | Galerie Friese presents the exhibition Enfant terrible since 13 March 2022 of the artists William N. Copley and Ambra Durante. It takes place in cooperation with International Wardrobe, Berlin.

William N. Copley and Ambra Durante, one born in 1919, the other in 2000, are two artists who belong to the group of self-taught artists who, with the highest level of artistry – which considerably increases the enjoyment of their work – draw their pictorial themes directly from their own lives.

Ambra Durante says: “My work is an attempt to reflect human consciousness and thinking in a way. I deal with the feelings of the single individual in society, with loneliness, idiosyncrasy and all that you as a human being – often – maybe – not even – anymore – always – get.”

And the always self-confident Copley has illuminated the relationship between man and woman pictorially like no other artist of his generation: how all relationships break and are ambiguous in the deepest sense, how the telling of pictorial stories contributes to the ironic pleasure of the thing, all this can be experienced in his pictures.

At the same time, in cooperation with International Wardrobe Berlin, we are showing a herd of votive horses from Poshina in the Indian state of Gujarat. The clay figures, created by hand from terracotta, serve as symbolic sacrifices to the gods – these horses fulfil wishes, they have magical abilities and this is also connected to them: one shows gratitude with a horse for a wish that has already been fulfilled.

“There is art, and there is art. One is made by people who have studied at academies, it is shown in galleries and museums and brings a lot of money at auctions. The other is created in seclusion. It has no artistic pretensions and is at most discovered as art by chance. Both versions require obsession. Both can be magical.”
