until 08.09. | #3519ARTatBerlin | CAMERA WORK presents on the occasion of the “Sixty” tour of the legendary The Rolling Stones from 7. July 2022 an extensive group exhibition in the gallery’s virtual annex.
The exhibition accompanies the British blues lovers, who have always cooperated with internationally renowned photo artists, from the beginnings of their career to the present. 35 impressive portraits of the musicians from more than 40 years of band history provide insight into the synergies created in the process. In addition to scenic concert photography or the classic portrait aesthetic of the recently deceased Patrick Demarcheliers, the exhibition also shows contemporary photographs by Bryan Adams as well as world-famous productions of Mick Jagger by Albert Watson. Artists such as Sante D’Orazio, Arthur Elgort, Gered Mankowitz, Terry O’Neill, Rankin, Herb Ritts and Jerry Schatzberg visualise the history of The Rolling Stones – a band whose unfolding has become part of the collective memory.
f.l.t.r.: Patrick Demarcheliers, Keith Richards, New York, 2000
Albert Watson, Mick Jagger in Car with Leopard, Los Angeles, 1992
Thomas Billhardt, Rolling Stones in der Waldbühne, West-Berlin, 1965
On 3 August this year, the European tour celebrating the band’s 60th anniversary will end with an additional concert at the Waldbühne in Berlin, which is significant for the band’s history. This is where the infamous performance of the band, which had only been founded three years earlier, took place in September 1965, as documented by Thomas Billhardt. The Waldbühne, which was demolished by fans after the concert, was to underline the band’s reputation as a rebellious counterpart to the commercially already established The Beatles. Thomas Billhardt’s photography of the aspiring “Street Fighting Men” is part of the exhibition.
Online-Exhibition dates: Thurdsday, 7. July to Thursday, 8. September 2022
