until 04.02. | #0911ARTatBerlin | Stella A. shows since 11th November 2016 the group exhibition “The Innocent Eye” by the artists Gita Fouri and Stefan Wolf.
In this exhibition we are showing photographic work by Gita Fuori and collages by Stefan Wolf. Both are using different sources for the combination in a picture. The mixture of elements from different spheres can hamper or even suspend familiar perceptual processes, thus permitting the chance of seeing much like „for the first time“.
The title The Innocent Eye refers to the correspondent book by American philosopher Nico Orlandi.[1] Orlandi argues against the thesis of orthodox perceptual psychology according to which a cognitive process is started by the visual perception. For Orlandi in turn visual perception is not a cognitive act. Without going further into this thesis, we are using the term „innocent eye“ in this exhibition as a metaphor for the possibility of reaching a new, unstained, „innocent“ view through the work of art.
Gita Fuori is working with analog photography. During exposure in the darkroom she mostly uses several negatives. Her compositions are formed by their overlaying and mounting. The pictures are then put in specifically selected frames. The framing turns them into objects. The impression of a stage emerges. The starting point for the photographic works are usually pictures found in newspapers or encyclopedias in addition to photos of her own. Photographs are claiming the truth, their truth being enclosed in the time of their genesis. By juxtaposing pictures dating from different times they are freed from this time bound nature. Through several copying steps a polarizing black and white aesthetic is produced. Some aspects are emerging more clearly and complement each other.
Stefan Wolf presents a series of portrait collages dating from 1986 to 2015. The first portrait of the series is from 1986 and is titled „Mona Lisa on the tracks“. It shows the face of the Mona Lisa in front of a soviet railroad system in the background. All other sheets of the series are constructed in the same manner. A portrait, mostly that of classical Renaissance painting, is pasted on modern glossy magazine pictures. These magazine samples invariably come from popular DDR-journals of the 70s and 80s, thus linking to a particular historical situation/event. They are souvenirs of a life style, inhering to a personal empirical background. The range of motives in the DDR-magazines was quite limited, they told of work, sports and public housing. This stereotype is also reflected in the series. The absence of the personal element in these pictures due to showing only masses or fuzzy (smiling) faces, is put back to them, although as anachronism.
