Auguste Renoir – En Été

Artist

(Pierre-) Auguste Renoir was born on February 25, 1841 in Limoges in Limousen. He died on Decemeber 3, 1919 in Cagnes-sur-Mer on the Cote d’Azur. He was a famous French impressionist painter. Renoir was a learned porcelain painter and started studying painting when he was just 20 years old. After intensive work with impressionism, Renoir turned towards classicism. Renoir had his first son in his mid-forties, Pierre Renoir, who became an actor. Around 10 years later he had his second son, Jean Renoir, who became a director. He became a father of three sons when he was 60. Renoir became sick with arthritis at an old age yet continued to paint constantly. He even had his paint brush taped to his hand because he couldn’t hold it anymore. 6000 works of his existed when he died in 1919.

Artwork

En Ete was created in 1868. It shows Renoir’s then lover, Lise Trehot. It measures 59 x 85 cm (width x height).

Brief description

Lise, Renoir’s lover from 1865 until 1871, is sitting in a relaxed position on a chair. Her long, dark hair is tied back with a red ribbon. Her curls fall down to her shoulders and arms. Her short sleeved white blouse has slipped off of her right shoulder. Her left hand is holding her right hand while her right hand is holding a twig with leaves or a flower; they lie casually in her striped skirt. The light-catching, dark green leaves in the background are eye catching for the observer. The fascinating play of light and shade in the background of this picture is limited. Lise herself is lit by an unknown source, which makes her appearance seem calm and well-proportioned. The red accents of her clothes create a complementing contrast to the green of the leaves.

Genre & Material

Painting of Impressionism. Painted with oil on a canvas.
