NEWS: MoMa PS1 presents first major exhibition by Frieda Toranzo Jaeger | 22.09.2022-13.03.2023

This autumn, MoMA PS1 presents the first major solo museum exhibition of painter Frieda Toranzo Jaeger (Mexican, b. 1988) in the United States. On view from 22 September 2022 to 13 March 2023, Autonomous Drive brings together more than a dozen recent works, including three new commissions. Toranzo Jaeger’s large-scale, dynamic and modular works encompass a range of materials and techniques, including ceramics and embroidery.

Toranzo Jaeger’s research into the history of painting, with a particular focus on 15th century European altarpieces, informs her multi-part works. She draws on the sculptural forms and religious symbolism of the period, which coincided with the colonial expansion of the West, and expands these references to create imaginary constructions for a post-decolonisation world that proposes a future of queer freedom, connection with nature and …
