A sketchbook by Max Liebermann (1847-1935) from the art collection of the Akademie der Künste with drawings of garden locales on Wannsee will be restituted to the artist’s descendants on 5 June 2023. It is thanks to their kindness that the sketchbook can subsequently be reacquired against payment of a compensation sum.
During provenance research in the art collection, it was discovered that the inside cover of the sketchbook contains an estate stamp with Max Liebermann’s facsimile signature. It was acquired in 2005 at an auction of a Munich auction house. After Liebermann’s death on 8 February 1935, his widow Martha Liebermann put this stamp on all of the artist’s unsigned works.
