The exhibition “Avantgarde. Max Liebermann and Impressionism in Germany” will present over 100 masterpieces of German Impressionism, including works by Max Liebermann, Max Slevogt and Lovis Corinth, at the Museum Barberini from 28 February 2026. On display will be sun-drenched landscapes, atmospheric figure paintings and carefully arranged still lifes from over 60 international collections.
The painting style that emerged in France in the 1860s is characterized by the use of vibrant, luminous colors and an energetic, sketch-like brushstroke. With Max Liebermann (1847–1935) as its pioneer, this revolutionary new movement also became the dominant avant-garde in the German Empire from the 1870s onward.
