until27.07. | #4306ARTatBerlin | Galerie SCHMALFUSS BERLIN shows from 22. June 2024 the group exhibition “Embodied Vessels – Between body and vessel” with works by Andreas Amrhein, Wilhelm Frederking, Diane Haefner, Daniel Kruger and Roland Stratmann.
Images of people and animals have been found on vases and amphorae since well before antiquity. Even prehistoric finds show figurative elements on vessel shapes and everyday objects. Figurative representations in connection with functional objects of everyday and sacred use are visible signs of culture in many societies.
DIANE HAEFNER, Making Myself Monstrous II | glazed Mont Blanc porcelain with airbrush painting, 49 x 61 x 39 cm, 2021
ROLAND STRATMANN, Fayencen – FM4 | 3 Postkarten, ein Schnitt, 42 x 32 cm gerahmt, 2022
The exhibition presents five positions of contemporary art that are dedicated to the theme of body and vessel in different ways. The artists explore the world of objects and place them in relation to their own bodies, linking them with fragmented bodies, historical figures, ethnological artifacts or current pictorial inventions. In the puzzle game of artistic transformation, bodies become vessels and vessels simmer towards their embodiment. This leads to unusual juxtapositions and references. In the exhibition, superimpositions of contemporary history, hybrid creatures and symbiotic connections interlock to create a challenging combination of visual and haptic impressions.
