Tatafiore developed his forms of expression early on, working with different techniques and materials, combining painting and drawing, collage and object-like sculptures, and adopting a subversive approach. Central to his work is the theme of the French Revolution, which for the artist represents “a kind of ‘great metaphor’” (Jean-Christophe Ammann). Essential to this are its inherent ambivalences, the reign of virtue (“la vertu”), the mythological background, and history as allegory. This is done in a more playful or subtle form that incorporates language. This universal view is accompanied by the leitmotif of Vesuvius, as an eternal symbol of the dangers in history as well as his homeland, the land “to which one must always return, like Ulysses” (La terra, come Ulisse, a cui bisogna sempre fare ritorno, Ernesto Tatafiore).
