PROLOGUE | PERSONAL Nicole, where do we meet you? My studio is in the Atelierhaus Vulkanfiberfabrik (VulkanKunstwerke e.V.) near Berlin, in Werder an der Havel, directly by the river. It is part of a marina. I have an approximately 80 m² partitioned studio within a large hall, where I sometimes spread out with various works. The light is always beautiful, and now in spring, we no longer have to freeze. By the way, we currently have a free studio space available! Perhaps we are sitting in your favourite place? In that case, I just picked you up from the train station in my mobile studio camper van, and we are now sitting in my favorite spot in the forest. The sun is shining through the trees, a light breeze is blowing. I made us some coffee, and we are sitting at a camping table. Or, we could also meet at my exhibition at the Galerie kajetan in Berlin. There, you can see the works in their best light and wonderfully presented. It’s up to you! Lets go! You were born in 1969. Please tell us where you were born or grew up and which stages and people have particularly influenced you in your life so far. My father was a helicopter pilot, and we traveled the world from one oil country to another. I was born in Benghazi, Libya. After that, we lived in Iran (Persia), Trinidad and Tobago, Scotland—where I studied—then in London for about seven years, and in 2003, I moved to Berlin. Akademie der Künste Pariser Platz

Founded in 1696, the Akademie der Künste (Academy of Arts) in Berlin is one of the oldest cultural institutes in Europe. This international community of artists currently has about 400 members and includes the sections fine arts, architecture, music, literature, performing arts, as well as film and media art. KW Institute for Contemporary Art aims to approach the central questions of our times through the production, display, and dissemination of contemporary art. Since its inception, 25 years ago, KW has established itself, not only as an institution, but also as a dynamic and lively space for progressive practices within the Berlin art scene, as well as in an international context. Kunsthaus Dahlem

Kunsthaus Dahlem is an exhibition venue for postwar German modernism (East and West). It is administered and operated by Atelierhaus Dahlem, a non-profit subsidiary of the Bernhard Heiliger Foundation founded in 2013. Located at the edge of the Grunewald, the building was open as an exhibition venue in summer 2015 after a renovation and dismantling in accordance with historic preservation standards. There will also be a permanent exhibition on the building’s eventful history, free-of-charge to visitors. One essential area of concentration of the exhibition venue is the presentation of sculpture, supplemented by painting, prints and drawings, and photography. The Verein Berliner Künstler (VBK) House of Artists – more than a gallery – is a self-governing and independent association of visual artists living and / or working in Berlin. The club’s own gallery on Schöneberger Ufer acts as a platform for various exhibition formats and discourse events. In addition, the VBK cooperates with national and international organizations and implements art projects in Germany and abroad.
