To mark the 120th anniversary of Billy Wilder’s birth (1906–2002), the New Synagogue Berlin Foundation – Centrum Judaicum, together with Urania Berlin e. V. and the Jewish Film Festival Berlin-Brandenburg, will present the film series “From Berlin to Hollywood” in spring 2026.
However, Wilder was just one of many Jews who initially worked on Berlin stages and later in the American film industry – such as the actor Alexander Granach, the director Ernst Lubitsch, and the screenwriter Vicki Baum.
They shaped Berlin’s culture during the Weimar Republic and, after arriving in the USA, played a crucial role in shaping the burgeoning film industry in Hollywood.
