Benhadj & Djilali Galerie organises exhibitions of contemporary art from various disciplines in gallery spaces in Villa Heike in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen, district Lichtenberg. The gallery is both a commercial gallery and a venue for non-commercial, socially relevant exhibitions and projects that aim for high public and media attention. Gallery owner and curator Yasmine Benhadj-Djilali transformed the Benhadj & Djilali Gallery, then still located on Torstraße in Berlin-Mitte, into a temporary museum from 2018 to 2019 and presented the exhibition ONE DAY | BERLIN there. In it, artist Adrian Sierra Garcia intervened in the way we perceive time and space with an installation occupying the entire gallery space, creating connections to the life-threatening challenges people face when they cross “La linea” – the border between Mexico and the US. Occupying the gallery space with the blocking foreign object referred to the brutal and oppressive nature of the wall, which extends far beyond its physicality. One Day Berlin aimed to raise public awareness of the atrocities that occur along the dangerous border.
