Thomas Trum’s (thomastrum ) works will be part of « Ethereal » , our upcoming group show at our Berlin gallery. Join us on February 20th from 6-8:30pm for the opening.
Thomas Trum (b. 1989, The Netherlands) is a painter and is particularly fascinated by the idea of leaving behind traces. Trum explores the abstract. He works within a self-imposed, restrictive framework that exclusively focuses on line and colour, spanning various scales from paper to facades. Research into materials, techniques, and spatial composition are at the heart of his work. He often creates his works on a large scale and develops unconventional tools including giant felt-tip pens and custom-built rotating spraying machines. Intrigued by large vehicles such as agricultural machinery, which operate with maximum efficiency in a rhythmic pattern, Trum experiments with these techniques to continuously discover new ways to create images. The extensive preparations contrast with the execution of the final work, which sometimes only takes a couple of minutes. The process involves an interaction between human and tool, like a choreography, for applying the line on the surface in the best way possible. You can see the physicality in his works, a movement captured in colour. He uses the studio as a place for his ongoing study developping a clearly recognizable, colourful and abstract visual language.

ALPHA CLÉMENTINE, 2024 (3,5 × 5 × 4,5 cm) Dried Clementine peel, embroidered with brass and copper threads, glass beads, labradorite, pyrite, cotton thread.
.
The drying Clementine peel reminded me of lunar landscapes. I wondered if I could transform the organic chemical composition of a Clementine into one similar to that of a celestial mineral body. After being embroidered with copper, brass, labradorite, and pyrite, the peel is calcined in a kiln, taking on the appearance of a burnt mineral stone. Calcining the Clementine is a direct metaphor for the decomposition of matter, whether in a dying star or in the transformation of organic material on Earth. This process transforms a familiar organic object into a celestial artifact.
.
If a hybrid organic-mineral organism existed, it would possess unique abilities. Pyrite and labradorite could grant it properties for reflecting or absorbing light, influencing its visibility or camouflage. Copper might provide it with electrical conductivity, facilitating rapid electrochemical exchanges, similar to a highly efficient nervous

Star charts, which indicate the positions of stars and planets, rely on a conventional annotation system that includes information about their brightness or color. Among these conventions, the use of Greek letters is essential. As I studied these charts and repeatedly encountered the Greek letter alpha, I found myself mentally listing all the English words starting with the letter “a.” This constant flow eventually focused on three terms: alpha, asteroid, and anonymous. When I began embroidering constellations, the slowness and repetition of the act led me to play with these three words, forming anagrams in loops that gradually transformed into poems. Each drawing incorporates these poems, perforated and embroidered with my hair into the paper, as a projection of the human mind into the vastness of the sky.
